  I totally agree.I have started several lively threads on chair banning/burning under my Rivermead Womad forum name over the years to no avail. I have no issue with chairs in the open arena. only in front of the stages, especially Radio 3. I've arrived early so many times only to stand next to people with chairs, rugs etc which are then invaded by more friends who stand/lie in the places where bags and clutter were placed. Pushchairs are even more dangerous - both to the child and the unsuspecting crowd surfer who stumbles over them. Being only 5ft 2, I'm cheesed off with being pushed to the back, tripped up and pushed about. Ban chairs and clutter....'What do we want....' all together now....

  Womad is a family focussed festival, so when I choose to go there as opposed to any other festival (other festivals are available), I know I can reasonably expect chairs, blankets, pushchairs and everything else you need to keep Grandpa, in-laws, cousins, friends, toddlers, teenagers and the brand new grandchildren happy. That may mean having a base for people to flit off from and come back to. I don’t have children myself, and go just for the music. I recognise that I am no longer Womad’s target audience, but love being there and wouldn’t want to change the way it has evolved into such a welcoming family festival complete with everything that entails. I have never been in so much of a hurry that I’ve tripped over anything – there are tiny people around, so be careful! The Womad of 30 years ago (or just 10 years ago) seems to have been very different and I can appreciate that people who have walked a lot of path want to return each year to the Womad they fell in love with, so the changes will be hard felt and not easy to accept – after all this the festival you and I have claimed as our own; so has everybody else and so it is and it has changed. And for as long as I find the changes are for the better, I will love going. Bring the kids; bring everybody, relax and have a great time.

  Oh . . . hang on . . . I've just gone back and read the whole thread . . . I NEVER leave my chair . . . it is used only for me to sit on and only if I feel the need . . . i.e. extra tiredness or a lovely chilled out gig (Radio 3 especially!) . . . if I leave my spot, my chair is neatly and compactly folded in its nice little bag and leaves with me . . . I still stand by my buggy though having attended Womad with children that can not yet walk!
  I can't believe people actually space hog!! Never come across it myself! x

  I also need a sit down now and again as my poor old back can't cope with standing for long periods of time, so I have a camping stool which attaches to my rucksack. I would never 'save' a space and then go off elsewhere, that is just selfish and rude. Almost as bad as reserving a sunbed when abroad and then not actually sunbathing until about 3 in the afternoon!
  I don't have any problem with groups of chairs as long as they have people in them!
  Buggies are more of a nightmare for the person trying to navigate their way through the crowd than the crowd itself!

  Yep Jax I agree and have a small metal camping chair for my old frame, but as SM says it stays with me at all times. If go it goes too.
  The only 2 places its an issue are in Feed the world and Radio 3 elswhere there is plenty of room.
  No issues with buggies tho.

  If we all brought shovels and stools we could dig holes for the tall people to stand in and let the shorter people stand on stools that why we would all end up at the same high!
