  I think I'd rather not see police replaced by private security to be honest.

  I wonder if this is a bargaining position? If the police think "if we're not there it can't go ahead" and Womad respond with "yes it can" it may help negotiations?

  We don't think they have anyone to spare thanks to the big school sports day in London, we did take the police over private security any day

  also going public my encourage a few opportunist thieves to chance their arm, the last time WOMAD was at reading the campsite was plagued with people breaking into tents and that's wasn't fun and spoiled the atmosphere in the campsite.

  Part of me thinks it's no big deal, especially if it's just this year due to the Olympics. But I do agree that I would rather have the police presence than extra private security... At least we can be reassured that WOMAD is still on :)

  Ive seen this before at events where the Police demand X number of officers which means the organisers have to pay the full cost of them being there. The actual number needed is quite small mainly to direct traffic, but they rightly want to be inside to be able to deal with emergencies and liase with Womad Production. Normally its a matter of freindly discussion and agreement , if it goes beyond that and becomes a threat ie if you dont allow x we will object to your licence next year than thats something else. Police are trying anything to get money as they have had cuts. Womad will replace coppers with a decent security firm if no agreement so Wilts Police will lose out in money and reputation.

  Agree with DT - this is part of the negotiations over price. Police took it public by challenging the licence. WOMAD are saying "we don't need you anyway". Most likley outcome is that a price will be agreed and the police will be there.

  Received July Womad newsletter tonight which contains this...

  "WOMAD has now received the reassurance that there is no threat to this year's 30th Anniversary festival due to take place at Charlton Park from the 26th to 29th July. Whilst the final decision on how the festival will be policed has still not been agreed between Wiltshire Police and WOMAD the discussions are ongoing and positive"

  So that doesn't say whether the police will be there or not, but sounds like there are no problems about going ahead.
