Great Tit Watch:
There are definitely at least seven chicks; the other two could have been underneath/heads down, but we saw seven open beaks at the same time yesterday, so irrespective of the actual number, the chicks are now collectively known as the Seven of Nine and are doing fine; still blindly swaying their open beaks and looking a little fluffier, but no less ganglier. Titan and Titty finding lots of food and keeping the nest nice and clean. A thrilling but tense moment yesterday evening when a sparrowhawk landed on the feeder tree (we made a tree out of lopped branches from which we hang the feeders) just yards from the house – he was magnificent; the silence was deafening and we were very relieved when we saw both Titan and Titty on the nest soon after. The sparrowhawk may well have his own chicks to feed; such is the way….
