"at least they have a link to "Sponsors" Womad UK does not"
Secret sponsors eh?
Perhaps there are loads of companies out there with a hidden agenda to propagate world music (and dance) by giving money to WOMAD. We need to know who they are! (- so we can thank them).

Lucky Herbert ! Very good point Thank you for a touch of reality. Also has this been going on for 9 years??? Cal N Del very true point better to work with
Many thanks all feeling better, thanks again for the reality check.
Mr Beef, just because we need oil does not mean the oil companies can do what they like, nor because we own cars do we have to agree with how oil companies can behave. We may drink water, but that doesn't allow water companies to do what they like either

I don't know how you can separate criticism of womad's choice of sponsor and your own choice of lifestyle and the transport it requires. I have not had a car since the mid-90s and deliberately live in a way that does not depend on having a car.. . . but boy is it a struggle getting to CP by public transport - I feel like a human/donkey hybrid, but I would still not have a car because I feel so strongly about the damage they have caused to the environment and society, for short-term economic gains. Cars are a function of capitalism. Cars made people mobile, made them desire and aspire, seduced them with the "freedom" a car would give them, the status, the convenience. . .

I tend to agree here with Del and Mr Beef, we all depend totally on oil whether it is for the butyl polymer that makes rubber for tyres or the wires that work the IT systems that allow you to book a ticket. Sure boycott Womad if it makes you feel better. I'd rather they were up front about their sponsorship and will have a stall where they can explain some of their outrageous environmental crimes and we can show them that not everyone is indifferent and we do care how the oil is got from the ground and it should not be at any cost.
I d rather put public pressure on them to change their ways, sadly the western world is stuffed as we are using the planet up about 2.5 x the rate of replenishment, so none of us should be guilt free.
"When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money."

I love that quote DT.
Yes SC. Shell has been sponsoring Womad NZ since 2003, which is why I'm suprised that we are only just discovering it! It's there plain as day on the website!
I really am sad that Womad has decided to continue taking Shell's dirty money. I do agree that the world is dependent upon oil and there's not a lot that anybody can do about it . . . but that doesn't excuse killing in the name of!! As oil company's go . . . Shell's pretty much the worst of the worst.
I'm not going to boycott Womad . . . perhaps I'm just not moral enough. I love Womad too much. Our whole family's whole year is totally geared towards Womad . . . it's what gets us through and it's where I feel my most at home and at peace. I just can't give that up . . . and I don't see what good it would do if I did . . . . but it is such a shame that that perfect love has been spoiled.

You’re a wise Sage DT, perhaps you should re-consider the talking book.

WOMAS is a music festival, why do you assume they hold the same ethics as your-self?
Because they plan music from across the world?
They are essentially a money making business and therefore potentially have the same morals as any other business.
Boycotting WOMAD will make as little difference as not owning a car. It may make you feel good, but make no difference what so ever.
I do not see the point in cutting off my nose to spite my face.

Amen Jaycee!
I think Womad have projected that image though . . . I don't think people have just assumed. x

Fair enough, not bothered reading the fine print.

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed... A few people cried... Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form, and says, "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.
