I was very pleased with this years festival, i knew all year that it would be a turnaround from last years 'womud'!

However ever since my first womad 5 years ago i have thought that fabric wristbands would be much more comfortable and hardwearing. The writing and logo often rubs off mine and surely it would be more ecological to use fabric ones?

Obviously im sure there are cost issues as its probably more expensive, but overall i think it would be a better idea!

:)

I never understand why people complain about noise or music at night when at a festival. The simple fact is, if you're really tired, you'll sleep regardless of noise. I always find the noise around festival campsites comforting. I find it a soulful acknowledgement that people are truly enjoying each other in conversation, dance , wild laughter or music.

When your friends are round at your house and your having a few glasses of wine or bacardis or whatever is your preference, are you telling me you don't put music on and sometimes you don't suddenly start doing weird disco dancing at 3 in the morning and sometimes you don't break into kareoke and sometimes you don't replay that song 10 times and turn that one up really loud, then wave goodbye to your guests from your front door at 4am...trying to be quiet but shouting goodbyes down the street?

I can assure you, womad is full of gay people - there were 2 in our small group this year and 4 in our bigger group the year before, and 7 the year before that.

Quote ..Also, it was sad that the 10p deposit on the cups ended up ended up with children going round 'begging' for you cups (we were asked may times if they could take our cups before we'd even finished drinks) and children hovering round stalking for cups that weren't firmly being held. I realise their parents are responsible for preventing them doing this but still it's not a nice feel - i saw two small children (around 8/9) actually IN one of the paper bins fishing out cups...not nice! ..Quote

Aaah. reminds me of my well spent youth, collecting discarded Corona bottles to get the deposit back on them. If you knew where the shopkeeper stored them then there was a few bob to be made.. lol

Just returned from a smaller festival and was horrified at the lack of recycling and the crunching of the plastic cups in the mud and the rubbish everywhere.

Womad is very well organised, really it is, compared to some. Mean Fiddler run some of the festivals CP mentions very well from a H&S and licencing viewpoint but they are very corporate and often have big sponsership. The smaller festivals can be great but sometimes they make schoolboy errors. I LOVE Womad it strikes the balance between the 2 and if I was looking at it with a work hat on I would be very happy.

A bit more cider would be good...... come to the Great Dorset Steam Fair in Blandford this week the cider starts at 6.5%!

This year was a great week-end and some great different acts. My only critism is with some of the wingeing people, much like the ones moaning here. There seems to be a rise in ignorant moaning minnies who push there way ignorantly passed everybody and not a smile in sight often looking for the most anti-social position to place their Camping Chairs. As for the critism about Kora, they were a fine band of mainly Mauri rockers who literally blew the crowd away with a thrilling gig topped off by the Red Arrows fly past. Oh and a special thanks to the plebs on their mobiles all through the Tibetan Monks Chanting. Keep it up Womad. BAN THE CHAIR PEOPLE !!!

The huge number of interesting posts in this thread have covered a lot of points - thanks to everyone for your comments! - but CyberPurple now raises the issue of chairs. Yes, that can be very delicate. For "quiet" gigs it's lovely to sit and listen instead of standing and dancing. Over many years my wife and I used "ground-level" chairs (Crazy Creek, purchased years ago, with great difficulty, from the US) because we are getting on a bit (not disabled, but we're now 66 and 67 years old) and need some back support if we sit for an hour or more. Those chairs never blocked anyone's view since we were sitting on the ground. But more and more people now bring ordinary folding chairs. They used to be placed at the edges of the crowd, but now people just put them down in the middle.

This year as we drove into Malmesbury we realised we'd forgotten our chairs, and had to buy normal-height folding ones in town. We did try always to put them where other people also had chairs, and not just put them down in front of people sitting on the ground. But how to deal with this is clearly a problem, as there were a lot of people using them, and I just don't have a good solution.

(I won't go into the other problem, raised in another thread, that we are quite short, and when we watch a performance standing up many people who are taller just push in front of us, obliterating our view. But many thanks to the TWO people this year who carefully asked whether they were blocking our view and found a mutually satisfactory solution - that's never happened before.)

I enjoyed the festival enormously this year but would like to add my voice to a number of the points made above.

1. There need to be signposts, especially to the parking areas.

2. The gateway between the 2 yellow parking fields became seriously rutted - if there were rain it would have been impassable.

3. Programmes should be available at entry - by the time I found one I'd missed the first event I wanted to see.

4. I thought at times that the noise leak from other tents was insulting to the musicians I was trying to listen to

I don' understand the bitchin' about price of food etc. surely if you think stuff is too expensive - don't buy. Buyers in any market hold the real power - they just don't use it wisely or collectively.

These guys come to the festival to earn a shed load not becuase they are altruistic or community spirited. They have to pay a concession to the organisers that would make most people balk at even trying.

I'm not buying beer at the festival next year - for the most part it is was less than a pint and there was not enough of a selection! I suppose it would be a little churlish to complain that it was warm!!

Not sure of the intentions of the organisers in respect of taking beer into main arena given the signs at main entrence re no cans bottles etc.

My main gripe is with the "World of Well-being". Much as I like the idea of a bit of pampering at a festival, why charge per day? It's a music & art festival so if anyone wants to chill out in this way, why not take bookings per half day, so that we can spend the other half of the day watching bands?

Also, what's with beer tents - whose idea was it that we don't get to stand up or sitdown inside, only stand up at the bar (or sit-down if you can find a seat?) With that sunshine, we would have more than welcomed the additional shade. Loved the idea with the deposit on the beer cups, but didn't like being hassled for my cup when I still had half a pint to drink!

Definite improvment on last year and the arboretum really came into its own!

:-)

Hi all,

Finally got around to trudging through my pics and have uploaded to flickr...

http://flickr.com/photos/22731786@N02/sets/72157606813286077/

Should have had plenty more pics, but I seemed to spend far too much time completely oblivious to the fact that I had a camera strapped to my belt hehe! I'll make a better effort next year ;-)

Yep, that's right. We went to Callum's real coffee stall as soon as we saw their long queue (always a good sign, we thought) and their prices. But we have had our coffee off this guy before at Womad and always found the quality top-notch and the service fast, staff happy - if a little checky at times - so it's nothing new to us. We, too, thought it was the best coffee at Womad - but it has been for years!

We noticed last year he had a note in the window about his cakes being without e-numbers or additives (no notice this year, but the same cakes - we asked and were told). With the heat this year, we loved his banana smoothies, big cup for just £2 and 2 bananas in it, his sign said, though we thought it should read 'milk shake' because without yoghurt they aren't true smoothies, but it's a minor quibble. Top value!
