From Switzerland
Cajun music done the Alpine way
Lennon first met McCartney at a garden fete, while Johnny Marr and Morrissey came into each other's orbit on the doorstep of the singer's childhood home. The first encounter between Robin Girod and Cyril Yeterian was somewhat different: aboard a passenger ferry that Girod was piloting across Lake Geneva. A shared love of old-timey music was swiftly revealed and a friendship blossomed, resulting in the Cajun outfit Mama Rosin. And while the snowy foothills of the Alps are several thousand miles from southern Louisiana's steamy swamplands, their location isn't betrayed by their music. They capture that Cajun feel perfectly - that essential combination of maudlin and joy - and have even added banjo to the palette. "It's unconventional," Cyril admitted to The Guardian, "but we never set out to become a normal band. I mean, I have an Armenian name, I was born in Lebanon, I live in Switzerland and I play Cajun music. How crazy is that?"
