When the DJ Keb Darge announces that "there's nothing better than playing a classic soul track and knowing that half the people in the room have never heard it before", he's not in the slightest being elitist. For Scotsman Keb is the opposite - someone who takes a machete to bullshit and one-upmanship. The delight for him is that he's spreading the word to the uninitiated, opening up new musical horizons rather than allowing it to become the preserve of a snobbish elite. Keb's formidable worldwide reputation has been forged through his much-respected compilation series and club night, both rejoicing in the name Legendary Deep Funk. "I generally play 50% deep funk, 30% soul, 10% Northern soul, 5% bopping blues and 5% new releases," he declares, "music that enriches the soul. Things that give people the experience of music which the soul scene takes for granted."
