Another wonderful West African singer-songwriter…

WOMAD UK 2011 it was Mali's Fatoumata Diawara. This year, the smart money is on Kareyce Fotso to be the young female singer-songwriter from West Africa to walk away with our hearts this weekend. Having initially studied as a biochemist, Kareyce chose to push aside her microscope in favour of a microphone, to swap the petri dish for a plectrum. Whoever it was who offered Kareyce this career advice has definitely earned their money, for the recordings and performances of this young Cameroonian woman have put her very close to African music's top table. And if neither Kareyce's attractively undulating songs nor her beautifully picked guitar playing were sufficiently persuasive, then that voice surely clinches the deal. Smoky and with just the right amount of huskiness to it, it's a voice belonging to a new generation of African artists, a voice that we hope to be hearing for many years to come.
