From Barbados, United Kingdom
Legendary reggae producer takes centre stage
Even though he's never achieved household-name status, you'd need to chop down several trees to print out Dennis Bovell's CV. Barbadian by birth, he's simply one of the most significant figures in the history of British reggae, a producer/bandleader whose achievements are great and many. He was co-founder of Matumbi, the grossly under-rated band who once knocked spots off the band they were supporting (some outfit called The Wailers). He was an early adopter of dub and his sound-system would become a big influence on the likes of Adrian Sherwood and Mad Professor. He was the long-time musical ears behind Linton Kwesi Johnson, producing many of the poet's albums, including the classic Forces Of Victory. And he's been the knob-twiddler of numerous records from beyond reggae's boundaries - those by The Slits, The Pop Group, Fela Kuti, Orange Juice, Madness and (whisper it) Bananarama. Dennis Bovell is a tragically under-acknowledged legend. Now make up for lost time.
