The UK's world music godfather presents…
It would be fair - nay, undeniable - to say that Charlie Gillett is no Johnny-come-lately when it comes to the multi-limbed beast that is world music. Way back in 1973, he was spinning Manu Dibango records on his Radio London show and the intervening three-and-a-half decades have seen him cement his position as both broadcasting legend and éminent grise when it comes to the music of distant shores. For today's slot, Charlie will be spinning his favourite discs of the moment, as well as sharing the stage with a number of special guests, including a handful of members of Australia's Black Arm Band and a slimmed-down incarnation of raggle-taggle Euro-folkies 17 Hippies. The latter are a real favourite of Charlie's, a band about whom he's been "getting increasingly anxious that WOMAD audiences should have the chance to share my pleasure and I'm thrilled that the moment has arrived at last".
