Former Amparanoia frontwoman goes solo and stripped back

It was a career change made more by accident than design. Back in 2006, several members of the fulsome-sounding Barcelona band Amparanoia missed the plane to take them to a gig in Canada, leaving the singer Amparo Sánchez to take to the stage in the company of just drums and double bass. The audience response to the stripped-back set (fortunately the gig was at the double bass-friendly Montreal Jazz Festival) was phenomenal, leading Amparo to call time on the band. "I wanted to experience something new, something softer and more intimate," she explains, "in order to touch people in another way, to carry them away with the sound of my voice." That softer, more intimate experience came in the form of Tucson-Habana, an album recorded with desert-rockers Calexico both on their home territory of Arizona and in the Cuban capital. It marks the latest intriguing chapter in Amparo's musical life less ordinary.
